By Way of the Glen
By Way of The Glen is a 170 miles foot race between Glasgow and Inverness that follows two long distance routes, the West Highland Way and the Great Glen Way. The route begins at Milngavie Train Station, includes a 94 mile section of the West Highland Way, a short tarmac link, then 72 miles on the Great Glen Way. The course is fully waymarked and has a total ascent of around 24,000 ft.
The event is open only to individuals who have completed races of 70 miles or more; runners' previous race history will be vetted before full entry is confirmed. Checkpoints are provided along the route where support teams may meet runners. Some checkpoints are serviced by marshals for drop bags because of remote locations. Runners will be tracked and there is a requirement for at least one runner able to run in case assistance is needed off the route between checkpoints. Mandatory kit must be carried as specified in the pre race information pack.
Race rules include ID at registration, no transfer of place, no muling, no walking poles, no support runners or bike buddies, no dogs, and no swimming in the canal. The event uses a staged refund policy: a 30 day cooling off period with a small administration fee, 50% refund up to 12 weeks before race day, and no refund within 0 to 12 weeks. Presentation and prize giving are held on Sunday morning at the Inverness sports centre. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
