Montane Lakeland 50 & 100
The Montane Lakeland 50 & 100 features two long-distance trail races in the stunning Lake District: a 100-mile circular route with approximately 6300m of ascent and a 50-mile route covering the second half of the 100-mile course with about 3000m of ascent. Both races primarily utilize public bridleways and footpaths, incorporate staffed checkpoints with provisions, and require significant navigation skills and endurance.
The 100-mile route begins in Coniston, circumnavigating the fells and passing through valleys like Dunnerdale, Eskdale, Wasdale, Buttermere, and eventually reaching Keswick. It continues towards Matterdale, Haweswater, and returns via Kentmere, Ambleside, and Elterwater to Coniston. This course is designed to avoid popular summits, instead focusing on traversing valleys and contouring fells.
The 50-mile route commences near the northern end of Ullswater within the Dalemain Estate. It follows the eastern shoreline to Howtown, then proceeds to Haweswater and Mardale Head. The route continues through Long Sleddale, Kentmere, Ambleside, Langdale, and Tilberthwaite before the final ascent and descent to Coniston. Participants in the 50-mile race are based in Coniston, with coaches transporting them to the start and their kit being managed at the finish.
Both events have compulsory staffed checkpoints offering food and drink. The 100-mile event has 14 checkpoints and a 40-hour time limit, while the 50-mile event has 6 checkpoints and a 24-hour time limit. The demanding nature of the terrain, combined with darkness and navigation challenges, results in a significant failure rate, underscoring the need for extensive preparation and experience.
