Why help people returning from prison? Returning to normal life after serving a sentence is extremely difficult. People often face rejection when looking for work, have nowhere to live, and their relationships are broken. Without support and the opportunity to start over, they find themselves in a vicious cycle – without a job, there is no housing; without housing, there is no job. This is also why 70% of them return to prison.
This topic is rarely discussed, but it affects us all. People with a criminal past become our neighbors, colleagues, and part of our communities. Giving them a second chance for a new beginning is a path to a safer society.
- 20,000 people: Approximately 20,000 people are in Czech prisons.
- 10,000 people: Around 10,000 people leave prison each year.
- 1,800 Kč: The cost to society for one prisoner per day is approximately 1800 Kč.
- 70%: of prisoners serve sentences shorter than 3 years for non-violent offenses.
The path to crime prevention: Let's show that we can give people after serving their sentence a chance for work, housing, and to restore and strengthen relationships so they have the opportunity to return to a fulfilling life and live without punishment. Every person can make a mistake, and every person has the right to a second chance if they seek it.
Serving a sentence extends beyond prison walls: Serving a sentence does not only affect the convicted person but also their entire family. Children, partners, and relatives often bear a stigmatizing label that follows them at school, at work, and in public. Often for their whole lives. When we give a second chance to a person with a criminal past, we also help these invisible victims.
