The Old Crown Round
The Old Crown Round is a long fell race held in Hesket Newmarket, Lake District, on Saturday 12 September 2026. It is an English Championship FRA AL category race covering 36 km (22.4 miles) with about 2200 m of ascent. Minimum age is 18.
The route is a loop of the higher summits of the Northern Fells and starts and finishes on the village green. Terrain includes road, track, paths, open fields and open fell in some remote areas. Navigational skill is essential. Mandatory checkpoints are on Carrock Fell, Blencathra, Skiddaw House, Skiddaw summit, Knott and High Pike; Skiddaw House is a compulsory checkpoint.
There are three river crossing points marked on the map; one crossing may have a rope, one is a ford, and another will have a safety marshal. There is a runner friendly cut off of 70 minutes to reach the summit of Carrock Fell; runners who miss it may follow an alternative 27 km route to rejoin the course or return to the start. No poles are allowed.
This is an FRA AL category race and the FRA mandatory minimum kit applies. Required items include a waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and hood, hat, gloves, a physical map and traditional compass, whistle and emergency food. The use of GPS or electronic navigation devices is forbidden.

Limited car parking is provided in a nearby field at a charge. Camping is available in the same field with toilets and hot and cold water but no showers or electric hook-up. Maps are available for sale at registration. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.

Directions
Directions to Hesket Newmarket are provided for M6, South Lakes, and West Coast/Carlisle routes. Car parking is available for £3 per car.
Registration
Registration opens between 8:30am and 9:00am. A full kit check will be conducted.
Mandatory Equipment
FRA Mandatory Minimum Kit includes: waterproof whole body cover, hat, gloves, physical map, traditional compass, whistle, and emergency food. Long sleeve thermal layer may also be required. GPS devices are forbidden.
