Tarka Trail Railway Races
The Tarka Trail Railway Races take place in North Devon on a traffic-free route that follows the path of an old railway line. The course runs along the estuaries of the River Taw and River Torridge, passing through woodlands and countryside. The terrain consists primarily of flat, tarmac surfaces, though the first and last kilometer of each route uses grass and farm tracks.
The event features various distances on officially measured and certified courses: 50 km, Marathon, 25 km, Half Marathon, 10 km, and 1 km and 2 km Colourburst runs.
Most distances are out-and-back routes starting and finishing at Woolmer's Farm in Bickington. The 25 km is a point-to-point race starting near Smytham Holiday Park and finishing at Woolmer's Farm; a shuttle service is available for this distance. The route includes historical railway features such as old stations and signal boxes, including the 76m Instow tunnel and the 180m Landcross tunnel, which is equipped with permanent lighting.
Participants are set off in waves of approximately 100 runners. Feast stations providing water, electrolyte drinks, and various snacks are positioned along the courses. Cut-off times apply to the half-way points of the 50 km (4 hours) and Marathon (3 hours). While the event does not allow pure walking, a mix of running and walking is permitted. Facilities at the venue include on-site parking, bag drop, toilets, and food vendors. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
