Dorset Hillfort Ultra
Enjoy the history and hills of West Dorset as you run from one ancient hillfort to another in our 38 mile running event. It’s not flat with approximately 1,300m of ascent, but it is exceedingly pretty – which is good as there will be plenty of cake to keep you going.
Route Details
From the start in Maiden Newton, the route includes a flat start followed by a long, gentle hill to Eggardon Hill. It then descends along a track and across the old railway line to an aid station near Uploders. The course continues with ups and downs, including a significant climb to Abbotsbury Castle, offering views of the sea and Portland Bill. A section along the ridge follows the inland route of the South West Coast Path. Hardy Monument serves as a drinks station, followed by a downhill section to Maiden Castle for refreshments. The final section includes small inclines before descending to an aid station at Muckleford, and then a gentle path back to Maiden Newton.
The total distance is approximately 35.9 miles. The route is primarily on public rights of way with a small amount on quiet roads. Approximately 80% of the route is off-road on old turf and tracks, which may be uneven, muddy, or hard-baked. Runners must close gates behind them, and abiding by The Countryside Code is mandatory. Failure to close gates may lead to disqualification.
Aid Stations and Timing
There are six intermediate aid stations, with water and cake available at all. Two intermediate timing points are located at 17 and 27 miles. Gluten-free and vegan options are available at aid stations if notified in advance. Sandwiches are provided at the Maiden Castle control.
Navigation and Support
Navigation support includes GPX files, maps, and turn-by-turn notes for each section. Marshals will be positioned at busy crossings, but runners are responsible for crossing safely.
