Race formats and rules
- 200 m swim / 3 km run
- 400 m swim / 5 km run
- 400 m swim / 5 km run (relay)
Swims take place in a 25 metre pool: the 200 m swim is 8 lengths and the 400 m swim is 16 lengths. Any stroke may be used. A swimming hat is provided and must be worn so lengths can be counted. Runs follow a course around The Groe. In the relay the swimmer completes the 400 m then hands over in the transition area to a runner for the 5 km leg.
Minimum ages (as at 31.12.26): the 200 m event requires age 13 (a participant aged 12 may take part if they turn 13 before 31 Dec 2026); the 400 m event and the relay require age 15 (a participant aged 14 may take part if they turn 15 before 31 Dec 2026).
Hi, thank you for your interest in the Builth Wells Charity Aquathlon. This event is designed to encourage those of you who have not taken part in an aquathlon before. Though we also welcome seasoned competitors. This year there will be a short, a longer event and also a relay option. The first comprises a 200m (8 length) swim in the 25 metre pool, followed by a 3k run around The Groe. The minimum age for this is 13 (as at 31.12.26), so you could still be 12 to take part, as long as your next birthday is before the end of the year. The longer event will be a 400m (16 length) swim in the pool, followed by a 5k run around The Groe. The minimum age for this is 15 (as at 31.12.26), so you could still be 14 to take part, as long as your next birthday is before the end of the year. Finally, there is a relay event where you enter as a team with a swimmer covering 400m (16 lengths) in the pool before handing over in the transition area to a runner who undertakes the 5k run around the Groe. The minimum age for this is 15 (as at 31.12.26), so you could still be 14 to take part, as long as your next birthday is before the end of the year. We will close entries on the 02 August 2026, or when the total number of entrants for an event reaches 99. You can choose any stroke for the swim and we will provide you with a swimming hat which must be worn to enable us to count your lengths. It's a chip timed event, and all finishers will receive a medal and video of you crossing the line, plus there will be prizes for the age category winners. The event is to encourage people to take part in sport and also to raise funds and awareness for The Wales Air Ambulance and you can help by fundraising through this "Campaign" page we have set up with them https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/builthwellsaquathlon2026 . All the money raised will go towards funding support to provide essential fast medical aid, particularly across rural Wales, so hopefully you'll be able to raise some sponsorship as well. Please let us know if you have any questions. Best of luck!
