The MTC Hafren Ultra
The MTC Hafren Ultra is a 27-mile point-to-point ultra marathon held on 8 July 2026, serving as Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The course features a total ascent of 872 meters and a descent of 1,069 meters, finishing at the Mid Wales Arts Centre.
The race begins at Rhyd-y-benwch picnic area and includes a challenging mountain trek to the source of the River Severn on Plynlimon. Competitors are advised to stay on designated routes due to potentially hazardous bogs. A race marshal will be present at the source before participants continue on the Severn Path back towards the start area, with a significant altitude drop.
The route passes through established scenery, and the river path may sometimes be overgrown. Two checkpoint stations will offer food and drink, with vegan and gluten-free options available upon registration. Competitors needing other specific food options can label and deposit their own food bags. All events are cup-free, requiring a reusable cup.
Navigation files in GPX format are provided and recommended as much of the route is not signed. Entrants must meet mandatory kit requirements, maintain a minimum average pace of 4.0 miles per hour, and satisfy age and entry conditions. Finishers receive a bespoke medal and an MTC head visor.
Registration and Race Start:
Entrants must arrive at Rhyd-y-benwch picnic area between 10:30 – 10:45. The race starts at 11:00. This is a point-to-point race, and competitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements to the start and from the finish.
