Peak Rail 7 - Runner vs Steam
Matlock Athletic Club, in conjunction with Peak Rail, presents the Peak Rail 7, a unique race challenging runners to beat a steam-hauled heritage train. The event takes place on Easter Monday, March 29, 2027, starting at 9:30 AM from Peak Rail Rowsley South station.
The scenic 7-mile course primarily utilizes the White Peak Loop extension of the Monsal Trail, running between Rowsley and Matlock. The close proximity of the Peak Rail track offers supporters ample opportunities for photographs and cheering. The course is almost exclusively off-road, with only a small section entering Matlock. It also provides excellent walking and cycling paths for supporters.
Please note: Due to three flights of steps (two up, one down) required to keep the race adjacent to the rail line, the course is unsuitable for wheelchair users. Competitors will be sharing the trail with other users and are asked to exercise courtesy and good manners. Marshals and a lead biker will be present, along with marshalled road crossings. Extra care is advised on a short riverside stretch at Matlock due to uneven surfaces.
All runners receive a unique race memento. Prizes are awarded for overall male and female 1st, 2nd, 3rd, V40, 50, 60, 70 categories, and 'Team versus Steam' prizes. Supporters can purchase discounted train tickets for a special charter service. Refreshments are available at the Northwood Buffet at Rowsley South station, which also offers ample free car parking.
