Nine Edges Endurance for Edale Mountain Rescue Team
The Nine Edges Endurance is a fundraising traverse that raises money for Edale Mountain Rescue Team. The route covers 20 miles from Fairholmes in the Upper Derwent Valley to the Robin Hood Inn near Birchen Edge, crossing rough moorland and nine gritstone edges with about 900 metres of height gain.
Participants may walk, run, or climb. Walkers and climbers follow the same general route; climbers also climb one route of their choice on each of the nine edges. The route is not marked; checkpoints are provided along the way with refreshments at several marshal points and a drink at the finish. A control card must be punched at each control and shown at the finish.
Navigation and equipment requirements differ by discipline. Runners must use a physical map and a traditional compass for navigation and may not use GPS for navigation. Walkers and climbers may use GPS but must also carry a physical map and a traditional compass. A minimum personal kit is mandatory and includes waterproof jacket and leg cover, hat and gloves, warm layers, whistle, sufficient food and fluids, map and compass, and a survival bag or emergency shelter.
The entry fee includes refreshments, a contribution to the Peak District National Park Foundation, and bus transport back to the start. The minimum age is 18 and places may be limited; a waiting list operates when the event is full. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
