Meteor Mile
The Meteor Mile will take place on Friday 28th August 2026 at Gloucestershire Airport, Staverton. The event is run on the airport site and uses the main runway together with a section of support road.
The course begins with the first 300 metres along the support road before a right turn onto the runway for a 1k-plus dash towards the terminal. Runners then peel off to the right for the final 200 metres to the finish adjacent to the terminal building. Runway lights are used against the setting sun in the event staging.
First held in 2013, the race is a relatively recent addition to the Almost Athletes calendar and was traditionally staged on a Saturday evening at the beginning of September. The event had a three year hiatus because of the Covid pandemic and subsequent groundwork, and it was reinstated in 2023.
Chip timing has been introduced recently. The event combines competitive elements with a social and inclusive focus; children are encouraged to take part. Every finisher receives a bespoke medal. Prizes are awarded to the first male and female adult and junior U15 finishers, and the host club also awards prizes to its first male and female club finishers. The Aviator bar is used for the prize giving and post race socialising. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
History
Dating back to 2013, the Meteor Mile is a relatively recent addition to the Almost Athletes’ race calendar. Taking place at Gloucestershire Airport, near Staverton, traditionally on a Saturday evening at the beginning of September, it uses the main runway and section of support road, with the runway lights on against the setting sun.
The race had a 3-year hiatus due to both the Covid pandemic and subsequent groundwork and was reinstated in 2023.
The first 300 metres are along the support road before a right turn places you onto the runway itself with a 1k-plus dash towards the terminal. Peeling off to the right, the runners take on the final 200 metres to the Finish, adjacent to the terminal building. Chip timing was recently introduced to the event.
Whilst competitive, the social and inclusive nature of the race is paramount, with children encouraged to take part. Every finisher receives a bespoke medal, and prizes are awarded for the first male and female adult and junior (U15) finishers. As hosts, Almost Athletes also awards prizes to the first male and female club finishers.
The Aviator bar is the venue for the prize giving and is a great place to wind down, refresh oneself and socialise after the run.
