Bowels of Fleetwith Fell Race
The event on 27 June 2026 at Honister Slate Mine in Borrowdale offers two marked trail races that combine high fell running with a section through old mine tunnels. The courses are fully flagged and marshaled so there is no navigation requirement.Courses
5 km: The 5 km route begins with a short uphill section before entering the mine; helmets and headtorches are used for the underground portion.10 km: The 10 km route starts with an ascent to the summit of Fleetwith Pike, then returns to the mine entrance for the underground section with helmet and headtorch before continuing on the open fell. The underground course includes about 700 m of tunnels with inclines, mining ladders and large chambers and exits roughly 100 metres above the entrance. After emerging, runners continue to the top of Grey Knotts (697 m) and then descend via the tramway to the finish at Honister Slate Mines. Underfoot terrain is technical with steep ascents and descents.
Practical Details:
- Minimum age: 16
- Under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
- Minimum kit required includes a waterproof top and bottom, hat and gloves for emergency use; finishers may be spot checked for required kit.

Race Rules:
- Following The Specific Race Route: You must be in sight of a red flag or arrow board or marshal at all times.
