Why BOKSRUN?
The idea to organize our BOKSRUN came from our experience with running events where we supported "our" runners by having them participate in running events wearing "our" fluo-yellow boxing shirts. This was to increase the awareness of BOKS vzw and to bring the issue of "metabolic disease" more into the spotlight, making it better known to the general public and raising awareness.
However, because there was too little visible return from this, even with 1/5 runners wearing such a shirt and having an information stand from BOKS vzw, we played with the idea of organizing our own running event: "BOKSRUN". We wanted to create a running event that stands out from the others. Therefore, in addition to the classic running categories such as Kidsrun, 5km, 10km, we also wanted to make room for a recreational wheelchair race and a handbike race. The combination of these sports categories in one event is rarely seen.
This would also fit well with one of the four pillars of BOKS vzw itself: Sensitization and information: through all possible channels, ensure a better understanding, care, and guidance of metabolic disease patients, as well as an improvement in their quality of life/social integration and a faster and more accurate diagnosis of metabolic disease.
- We certainly increase awareness by highlighting the concept "Metabolic Disease" with this event and the existence of a patient organization for people with metabolic disease, namely BOKS vzw (Belgian Organization for Children and Adults with Metabolic Disease).
- Furthermore, we also work on the quality of life by demonstrating that children and adults with metabolic disease are capable of participating in sports and by offering them an event that is accessible to EVERYONE. We want to emphasize people with metabolic disease by providing an extra prize for them.
Furthermore, BOKSRUN, like BOKS vzw, is active at local, national, and international levels. BOKSRUN is open to every runner from anywhere. Near or far… We also try to work together with the local population and associations (such as Chiro, municipality, province, …). We try to emphasize the local anchoring with an extra prize for people from Kallo.
About BOKS vzw
BOKS vzw is the Belgian Organization for Children and Adults with Metabolic Disease. BOKS vzw is an umbrella organization for all rare metabolic diseases in Belgium. It operates under the High Protection of HRH Prince Laurent. BOKS vzw offers support throughout the entire journey that every person with a metabolic disease must undertake. This ranges from the search for information about the disease, reception and help with the upbringing of the child, to support upon the death of children and adults. BOKS vzw aims to optimize the quality and quantity of life for every person with a metabolic disease. Therefore, they work closely with metabolic physicians, pharmaceutical and specialized companies, CEMA's, INAMI, politicians, and foreign organizations.
BOKS vzw's operation is built around 4 pillars:
- Advocacy: Attending congresses, preparing and submitting files, participating in debates, informing members via infobox / social media or via working groups for each disease or individually.
- Sensitization and information: through all possible channels (media, schools, (para)medical professionals, member meetings ..) to ensure a better understanding, care, and guidance of metabolic disease patients, as well as an improvement in quality of life/social integration and a faster and more accurate diagnosis.
