Veins of Gold 2026
This challenging 8-mile mountain race features approximately 5,000ft of vertical gain, covering a variety of terrain including steep uphill trail, loose rock, shale, tundra, dirt road, and a small portion of paved road. The race starts at the Government Peak Recreation Area parking lot and finishes at Independence Mine.
Course Details
The route takes runners up Government Peak via the race trail, continuing along the ridge line to April Bowl, down to Summit Lake Parking lot, and finally to Independence Mine.
Registration and Pricing
Registration opens on January 1st and closes on August 8th. Prices vary based on registration date:
- January 1st, 2026 - July 5th, 2026: $85.00
- July 4th, 2026 - August 8th, 2026: $105.00
Registrations completed after July 25th are not guaranteed a shirt size or shirt.
Support for Alaska Mountain Rescue Group
10% of each registration fee will be donated to the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group, a nonprofit volunteer search and rescue organization.
Race Schedule (Saturday, August 15th, 2026)
- Race Start: 9:00 AM
- Day-of Bib Pickup: 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM
- Mandatory Race Meeting: 8:40 AM - 8:50 AM
Requirements and Safety
Participants must sign a waiver and have completed the course at least once prior to race day. Minimum required gear includes 500 calories, 500ml water, a light jacket, and hat/gloves. The race organizers reserve the right to cancel the race due to weather or safety concerns.
Rules and Conduct
- Bibs must be visible at all times.
- Assist runners in need; failure to do so may result in disqualification.
- Do not litter; use trash receptacles at aid stations.
- Sportsmanship is required towards all participants and staff.
- No dogs are allowed on the course.
- Poles are acceptable.
Cutoff Times
There is a 2-hour cutoff at the top of Government Peak to continue on. Runners must comply with instructions from course volunteers if past the cutoff.
Aid Stations and Course Markings
There will be at least 3 aid stations with water and fuel. The course will be marked with wooden orange/blue stakes and reflective arrow signs.
Required and Recommended Gear
Required: Minimum 500 calories, 500ml water, Light Jacket, Hat and gloves. Highly Recommended: Space Blanket, Whistle, Running Vest AND/OR 16 oz Water Carrying Capacity, Satellite Communication device, Bear Spray. Additionally Recommended: Food Reserves, Long Sleeve, Rain/Wind Pants, Sunscreen, Phone with Emergency Numbers Added.
Drop Bags and Refunds
Drop bags will be transported from the start to the finish line. No refunds, deferrals, bib exchanges, or race transfers are offered.
Awards
Race medals are for finishers. Podium awards will be given to the top 3 male and female winners.
Parking and Location
Parking is available at Government Peak Recreation Area or Independence Mine. This is a point-to-point race. Shuttle access information will be provided closer to the race date. Parking passes are not included in the race fee.
