St Sunday Sky Race
The St Sunday Sky Race is a classic distance skyrunning event around St Sunday Crag and the surrounding Eastern Fells, based in Patterdale. The course covers 29 km with approximately 2050 m of ascent and follows technical mountain trails that include sections from the old Lakes Sky Ultra alongside newly added segments.
The route is fully marked and supported with five manned checkpoints and one fully supplied feed station. Electronic timing is provided and participants are tracked using a GPRS tracker. A professional safety officer and a supporting safety team oversee event safety. Post race provisions include soup with vegan, gluten free and salty options.
The event is described as an entry level sky race intended as a stepping stone to longer or harder sky races while still offering mountain ridge and fell terrain associated with skyrunning. The course mixes technical trail sections that demand attention without including the ultra or extreme elements of longer events. The race takes place within the Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is organised by Lake District Sky Trails. Participants must be 18 or older.
Race Route:
29km of hard mountain trails over St Sunday Crag and surrounding Eastern Fells. The SSSR is a true test of mountain trail skill. An entry level 'sky' type race to whet your appetite for our longer races.
Full of technical trails that are never too much, but will keep you alert and wanting for more.
The St Sunday Sky Race is just that stepping stone you have been waiting for. Trails winding over St Sunday and around the Eastern Fells put the SSMR in the 'skyrunning' realm but allows those without the distance in their legs or confidence in their heads for ridges such as Striding and Swirral Edges to experience what skyrunning in the English Lake District is all about.
The course is a mixture of parts of the old Lakes Sky Ultra with some new bits addd in without the ultra and extreme elements to it.
A great 'short distance' classic SkyRace.
