27th Annual Mill Pond Mile

The Mill Pond Mile is a one-mile run around the scenic Mill Pond in New London, Minnesota. It takes place each July, before the annual Water Days parade. It is a family fun run for all ages, not an officially timed race, so for those who wish to keep track of personal bests, we encourage participants, parents, or friends to bring a wearable timer or stopwatch.
The Mill Pond Mile was started in 2000 by Jim and Shelly Berg to honor the memory of their 10 year old son, Cody, who died in a car-bike accident in 1999. Each spring, all proceeds from the race go to provide college scholarships for members of the New London Spicer graduating class. View the list of all our current and former recipients on the Scholarships page. In 2022, Shelly's husband, Jim, passed away after a short but hard-fought battle with cancer. The scholarship fund was renamed the "Cody and Jim Berg Scholarship Fund," and the Mill Pond Mile continues on, thanks in large part to the dedication of the entire Berg family, plus friends, volunteers, and sponsors.
