John Muir Way Ultra Marathon
The John Muir Way Ultra Marathon is a 50 km race located on the East Coast of Scotland. The route primarily follows the established John Muir Way, traversing the coastal stretches, rural landscapes, and woodland trails of East Lothian. Participants run through several historic towns and villages, including Aberlady, Gullane, and North Berwick.
The event starts at the Port Seton Promenade. The course meanders through the region's iconic scenery before reaching the finish line at Foxlake Adventures in Dunbar. For logistics, race registration takes place at the finish location in Dunbar. The organizers provide transport from this site to the race start in Port Seton as part of the entry fee, allowing participants to park their vehicles at Foxlake Adventures for the duration of the event.
The course features several time-limited checkpoints to ensure safety and progress. There is an initial cutoff at the halfway point in North Berwick, followed by a second checkpoint at Balgone and a final cutoff at Smeaton. The event relies on a team of volunteers to manage various aspects of the race, including water stations, course marking, and registration.

Meet the event organisers
John Whittaker - Race Director: John is a professional event coordinator with extensive experience. He is the race crew director for the Celtman extreme triathlon, a long-standing New Years Day Triathlon organiser, and has fronted the John Muir Way Ultra for the past 5 years.
Peter Ness - Race Director: Peter has participated in or organised over 100 triathlons, duathlons, ironman events, cycling, adventure races, and running events. He has directed the Lochore Triathlon for over 10 years and was a core member of the European Duathlon Champs in Edinburgh in 2007. More recently, as a Director of Scurry events, he has enjoyed creating new trail running and multisport events.
