ESSEX CHALLENGE SERIES #2
EPPING - CHELMSFORD
For regular hikers looking for a long distance challenge
The second hike of the series, the Epping to Chelmsford (32km) hike builds on everything the Essex Challenge Series stands for - distance, endurance, and showing yourself what you’re capable of.
This is one of our most popular challenge routes, and for good reason. Covering a full 32km across varied terrain, it offers the perfect balance of physical challenge and rewarding progress as you move from countryside into the outskirts of Chelmsford.
Designed for those ready to step beyond our Adventure hikes, this route takes you across a mix of countryside terrain and into the outskirts of Chelmsford, demanding both physical endurance and mental grit along the way.
This is a long, demanding day on your feet and a key step in building confidence over distance. Expect big miles, a steady 5km/h pace, tired legs… and a real sense of achievement as you reach the finish.
Whether you’re continuing through the series or taking this on as a one-off challenge, you’ll be part of a supportive group all showing up for the same reason - to push themselves and see what they’re capable of.
What to expect
- A 32km long-distance route across varied terrain
- A steady but purposeful pace - 5km/h
- A supportive group environment (no egos, just encouragement)
- The kind of challenge that pushes you, in the best way
- A serious sense of achievement at the finish
Who is it for?
- Those who have completed Adventure hikes (15–25km)
- Anyone who has already tackled or is comfortable with longer distances
- People looking to build endurance and push further
- Not suitable for beginners
Can I come alone?
Absolutely! Many people come along on their own and quickly get chatting.
Our hikes are designed to be welcoming and inclusive, and Jack and the team are there to make sure everyone feels comfortable and supported throughout the day.
Everyone was new once. 😊

"Today was the 2nd trek I have completed with Essex adventures and I have to say it did not disappoint. From ease of organisation, clear communication to the meticulous detail of the route plans, Jack and team made this a truly memorable experience. A 24 kilometre hill hike passed in the blink of an eye because it was pure fun and full of laughs. Great day guys, thank you for your conversations and encouragement and can not wait to book another adventure! And just to add, for anyone debating doing to do a trek solo and not part of a wider group, don’t hesitate, the team will make you feel more than welcome!" Ilona, March -26
